4 Ways Small Businesses Can Triumph Over Amazon

Running a small business is never a small matter — and no one knows that better than small business owners. You have so many hats and you wear, most of them at the same time. When you are caught up in the day-to-day, it can be hard to focus on the big picture. However, it’s important those strategic issues and concerns are addressed — and one of the biggest ones is how to compete with big-box delivery companies like Amazon. Do you need a strategy to help your business compete in the digital marketplace? Instead of just one, how about four?

Delegate to Trustworthy Employees

If it’s time to focus on the big picture, then that means it is also time to delegate some of the many tasks that occupy your time. For example, instead of trying to troubleshoot all your IT (information technology) issues, hire a freelancer, part-time employee, or college intern to support your tech needs. Also, consider bringing on administrative help. Admin tasks are one of the most frequent time investments for small business owners. If you are working in a small space or from your home, don’t stress about figuring out an additional workstation. According to Upwork, you can hire a virtual assistant — someone who works remotely to handle customer support, data entry, calendar management, and office assistance. Be sure to look for these candidates on reputable telecommute job boards where applicants are vetted and proven to be successful.

Support Other Small Businesses

You may think other small businesses are the competition, but in reality, they are your biggest allies. When you put your wealth back into small businesses, you are supporting your field no matter how different your industries. Plus, the action is often reciprocal. The more you engage and interact with other small businesses, the more they will support your work in return. For example, if you are running a small marketing firm and frequently work out of local coffee shops, you may find that the day they need your assistance with a logo, brand, or website is the day you are no longer just their customer.

Focus on Shipping and Packaging

One of the easiest ways to push past the Amazon barrier is to emphasize beautifully packaged products. Personalized thank you notes and colorful packages that reflect your brand look way more appealing than the standard brown Amazon box. Think of the opening of your product as an experience that can excite the customer and make them feel recognized for their taste and style. Amazon has many convenient shipping options at prices that are sometimes hard for small business to replicate. You’d be surprised by how many customers don’t mind waiting an extra day or two for a beautifully wrapped purchased with a free gift, a few extra samples and a personalized experience that speaks to their needs.

Build a Beautiful Website That Is Easy to Use

The fewer clicks it takes you to land a sale, the more satisfied — and, hopefully, repeat —
customers you’ll secure. Engaging with you needs to be simple and effective, from a contact form on every page to a PayPal payment option for products, goods, and services. But on top of that, your website is a chance to tell your story and engage your audience with more than your company. There are many reasons a beautiful website draws clients in, from feeling like they are smarter and more sophisticated by being a part of your brand.

The age of Amazon has not only hit small business — major brands have also felt the impact. “Shop local” and “shop small” movements have rekindled a passion for homegrown products, making this also a time for innovation and change in the way we engage our clients. With a user-focused strategy, you can “wow” your customers and win them over time after time.
